No definitive timeline has been given regarding Panama’s payment of the $1.9 billion debt owed to rice millers in Guyana but the government is “optimistic” that they will be paid, Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha has said. At the sidelines of an event at the Ministry of Agriculture on Tuesday, Minister Mustapha explained that the matter is receiving attention at the level of the Panamanian Head of State after authorities there acknowledged the billion-dollar debt which saw more than 9,000 tonnes of rice being shipped to the Spanish speaking nation. And according to the minister, the Panamanian authorities are presently investigating “malpractices” with the deal entered into by the former APNU+AFC coalition government.
